Ele para no meio do caminho, olhando para o papel que tem o nome e o número de Jackie. JACK Queria tanto que você estivesse lá... SHANE Quem? JACK Você sabe quem. E cara, tu tá no ponto, hein? SHANE Obrigado, primo. Bom trabalho, também, disfarçando esses seus dois metros. JACK É, gostei, também. Tô até me sentindo mais confiante. Tipo um super-herói. SHANE Me surpreende, você não se sentir assim antes. JACK Depende, mas você entendeu. SHANE E aí? Pronto pra uma noite misteriosa? JACK Vamos lá. Cena externa, noite, lado de fora da Java. Uma fila de convidados mascarados aguarda para entrar. Troca rápida para cena interna, no pequeno hall de entrada da danceteria. LEON Seu nome? JACK Jack Buzzard. LEON Não mais. Aproveite a festa. Cena interna, noite, lado de dentro da Java. Jack observa o papelzinho laminado que ganhou com seu pseudônimo ("Dançarino de Ébano") e outros convidados ao seu redor. "Lady Luck" também está tocando aqui. Quando a música termina, todas as luzes se apagam e certa peça instrumental começa, tendo uma gravação de Mindy por cima. MINDY (EM OFF) Desde os tempos primórdios, da época dos rituais de acasalamento, este é um dos meios mais eficazes de se cortejar e conquistar um pretendente. MINDY (EM OFF) Engana-se quem pensa que isso é só para um lado da moeda: a dança é um esporte de contato, manifestação física necessária tanto para homens quanto para mulheres. MINDY (EM OFF) É aqui, neste vasto espaço e neste suave ambiente, que todos mostram do que são capazes. MINDY (EM OFF) Seguros, poderosos, eles conduzem e ensinam. VOZERIO (mais baixo, mas ainda aplaudindo) JANINE Linda! MINDY Como devem ter visto em meu convite, esta não é só a comemoração do meu niver, mas também um baile. O Baile do Mistério. MANFRED Uhu! JANINE É! MINDY Devem estar se perguntando por que estão todos mascarados e com nomes diferentes. Bem, muitos de vocês ainda não se conhecem, e sei de alguns que são tímidos pra puxar uma conversa... Ela olha na direção de Jack, que estranha, a princípio. MINDY Mas por trás de uma máscara, sua confiança aumenta, pois você pode explorar um novo lado do seu ser. Deve ser assim que os super-heróis se sentem. JACK (sussurando pra si mesmo) Essa garota lê mentes, ou o quê? MINDY Existe também mais um motivo pra isso. Sim, pois o que vocês têm por dentro é diretamente ligado ao que põem pra fora, e aqui na Java, eu faço questão de que ponham pra fora o que realmente importa. VOZERIO (murmurando, tentando adivinhar) HINA A dança? MINDY Exato. VOZERIO (mais aplausos e comemoração) MINDY Eu sei... Eu sei que encontrarão um par perfeito pra dançar esta noite, e se não pra isso, ao menos pra um bom papo. MINDY Os nomes que escolhi pra vocês complementam outros que estão aqui, mas isso não é necessariamente uma regra. Se encontrar um parceiro que goste, não se revele ainda. Falem comigo caso não queiram esperar, mas deixem que o mistério tome conta de vocês. MINDY Expressem-se, meus amigos, este é meu presente pra vocês. Dancem como se não houvesse amanhã! No ritmo da música, estralando os dedos, eles se aproximam, de tempos em tempos arriscando passos mais ousados um com o outro. MARCO Que tal mais uma música, pessoal? Mantenham ou troquem seus pares, aproveitem pra experimentar! Jack e Jackie indicam aos indivíduos ao redor que não vão trocar de parceiro. A música seguinte, um dueto, tem mais teor de desafio. Mantendo uma conexão, eles terminam nos braços um do outro, sob um holofote. JACK (em pensamento) Queria tanto saber se é você... MARCO Parece que já temos um par formado esta noite! Uma salva de palmas para o Dançarino de Ébano e a Bailarina de Marfim! VOZERIO (aplausos) Os dois se olham, vendo que seus pseudônimos combinam. Eles juntam as mãos e se curvam, agradecendo. MINDY Vão querer mais uma? Podemos fazer isso a noite toda! Outra música, esta de batida mais rápida. Bebidas são servidas enquanto isso. Ele recusa e ela bebe um copinho, apenas. Os dois meio que interpretam a letra também. Troca/cena interna, fim da festa. Ele beija os nós dos dedos dela, num ato de classe, e ela retribui com um abraço e um aceno ao sair. Cena externa, na rua, já mais longe da Java. Jack tira a máscara e reflete sobre tudo, se sentindo nas nuvens. JACK Rapaz... TED Foi demais, cara! JACK Eu sei! Aquilo ali é pura paixão, tô falando pra vocês. MORRIS Você não largou dela nem por um minuto. Como acha que vai ser quando se verem de novo? JACK Acho que vamos nos aproximar rapidinho. HENRY Mas e a menina? JACK Que menina? HENRY Aquela, do restaurante. Como vai dizer a ela que teve seu coração roubado por uma dançarina um dia antes de se encontrarem? JACK Prefiro ver isso quando o assunto surgir. HENRY Só digo pra você tomar cuidado. Falar de outro par pode pôr as coisas em risco antes mesmo de começarem. JACK Estou tranquilo. Seus amigos se entreolham, desconfiados. JACK Ela é diferente das outras, eu sei que vai entender. Flashback das danças com a Bailarina de Marfim e de momentos com Jackie. When the song ends, all the lights shut down and a certain instrumental piece begins, with a recording of Mindy above it. On the beat of the song, snapping their fingers, they get close, once in a while risking more audacious steps. MARCO What about another song, everyone? Keep or change your pairs, this is the moment to try it out! Jack and Jackie indicate to the individuals around they will keep the same partner. The next song, a duet, feels more like a challenge. Keeping a connection, they finish in each other's arms, under a spotlight. JACK (thinking) I just need to know if it's you... MARCO It seems like we have a pair formed tonight! A round of applauses to the Ebony Dancer and the Ivory Ballerina! VOZERIO (clapping) The two look at each other, seeing their aliases match. They hold hands and bow down, expressing thanks. MINDY Do you want another one? We can do that all night! Another song; this one, with a quicker beat. Drinks are served during that. He refuses and she drinks only one shot. They're kinda interpreting the lyrics too. Change/internal shot, end of the party. He kisses her knuckles, in a class act, and she returns it with a hug and a wave as she leaves. External shot, on the street, away enough from Java. Jack takes off his mask and gets reflexive about everything, feeling over the moon. JACK Oh, boy... TED It was awesome, dude! JACK I know! That was pure passion, I'm saying to you. MORRIS You didn't drop her even for a minute. How do you think it will be when you see each other again? JACK I think we'll be close in a jiffy. HENRY But what about the girl? JACK Which girl? HENRY The one from the restaurant. How you'll gonna tell her that you had your heart stolen one day before you meet? JACK I prefer to see that when the subject comes up. HENRY I'm just telling you to be careful. Telling about another pair can put things in risk before they even start. JACK It's fine.
